Penelope woke up pretty fussy today. She was drenched in pee, which was weird, so I cleaned her up and gave her some milk. She drank it all, but was still very sad. So, I cuddled her to sleep in my bed for about 10 minutes when all of a sudden she woke up and started throwing up the milk all over me. We got cleaned up, and then I laid her down for a nap in her bed. A little while later she woke up crying, so I went in to check on her and could feel that she was very hot. I took her temperature, and it was right at 105, so I did what I could to cool her off, and then Chris took her to the ER. They wanted blood and urine samples, but had to do a lot of digging with a needle and a catheter to get each. Chris said it was very sad, and that they didn't even get the urine sample. I traded places with him after a while. After I got there they said they wanted to start an IV, and they dug in her veins 5 times before they finally got it in. She was screaming, and I was bawling. Then they came to do the catheter again, and fortunately they got it in on one try this time. I held her all afternoon, and she went from very frantic and upset around noon to calm and even playful around 4pm. The doctor came in and said that he wanted to admit her, but that she looked so happy that he felt OK letting us go home. They left the IV in her foot, and we have to go back tomorrow for more IV antibiotics and for test results. I feel pretty sure it's another UTI - because of her history and because of her waking up drenched in pee - but if her blood and urine come back normal then they'll have to do a spinal tap to test for meningitis. For now, she's sleeping peacefully in her own clean, comfy bed. I will likely lose lots of sleep tonight just listening for her. But it sure beats spending the night in the hospital.
