It's been about 7 weeks that Penelope has been attending her "unique needs" preschool and its integrated therapy, and her progress is rapid and amazing. Walking out of school just now, she yelled, "Bye Sophie!" and her friend yelled back, "Bye Penny!" In fact, every time she goes to and from school lately lots of kids say bye to her and call her by name, and she does the same back. She loves to tell me that they are "Penny's friends!" The other day Chris picked her up from school and the teacher brought another child with Penny to the door. The teacher had Penny and the other child say bye to each other, and look each other in the eye, and call each other by name. The exercise was more for the other child, who has autism, but these strides are important for Penelope too. She is doing so great. Her teachers have told me on more than one occasion what a leader she is in the classroom, even calling her a little mother hen. One of her teachers met my older 3 kids recently and spoke directly to them, saying Penelope is so confident and self-assured likely due to their good examples. It was a heart squishing moment for me. These days Penny can answer the question "what is your name," and "how old are you," appropriately. She's just doing awesome. And she's hilarious and severely endearing and terrifically high maintenance. And I adore her.
